Travel: The last part of 2018

Standing on top of Pike’s Peak earlier this year, I realized that I wanted to spend the rest of my life trying to see as many mountains as possible.

Standing on top of Pike’s Peak earlier this year, I realized that I wanted to spend the rest of my life trying to see as many mountains as possible.

I obsessively troll travel accounts on Instagram and dream of the day I can once again stand on top of a mountain and enjoy the view.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always wanted to do this, but getting older, a little wiser, and my bank account a little fuller has helped me afford such experiences.

I have seen a lot the last two years but there’s still four months to go in this year and lots of experiences to gather.

September: Taos

I’ve been to Taos many times.  I was just there earlier this year with my then girlfriend where we hit a couple of hot springs, the Rio Grande Gorge, and visited some amazing friends who made us an amazing dinner from locally caught trout.   It was a magical evening.

I love this place!  I love visiting my friends and every time I go I see something different.  This time will be no exception.

Besides the numerous breweries I still haven’t visited, I will attempt my first big hike up to Wheeler Peak (13,159′).

David and Katie, my friends who live there, hike and run these mountains almost every day.  I’ve been assured there will be a beer waiting for me at the bottom.  I hope so because Katie is going to kick my butt all the way up that mountain.

October: Biking the Katie Trail, Missouri

I’ve been dreaming of this trip for several years and it’s finally coming true.

The Katie Trail is an old rail line that has turned into a biking trail. It’s flat as a pancake and runs from St. Charles, MO, near St. Louis, to Clinton, MO.  A trek of about 250 miles.

We won’t complete the entire 250 because of time constraints, but we will get to visit about 150 miles of it and hit local breweries and wineries along the way.

And the best part is that we’re heading there the first week of Octoberfest.

November: Los Angeles, CA

I know, this shouldn’t be considered vacation travel…but it is.  I’m heading out to see some good friends that I haven’t seen in a long time.  I’ve been two LA twice before so this time is not about touristy stuff.  This is about fun stuff: going to the beach, cookouts, dinner with friends, and just enjoying the scenery…through the haze!

On my first trip to LA, I saw one single (sort of) celebrity: Kato Kaelin.  If you don’t know who that is, it’s because he had his 15 minutes of fame in 1995 and has blown away with the winds of obscurity.

The second time, I apparently saw a reality TV star but I had no idea who it was.

Maybe third time’s a charm.  I have an obsession with Billy Bob Thornton and my friend Laurie tells me she knows the bar where he hangs out.

Maybe this time I’ll finally get that restraining order!

What are your plans for the rest of the year?  Anything big?
