Lately I’ve been trying to figure out what the hell is going on in my head in regards to my musical tastes. I’m finding myself actually reverting backwards instead of narrowing the focus to one genre like most old people.
You’d think that a 42 year old would only listen to hair bands and a little grunge mixed with some classic rock. I was a product of the 80s for shit’s sake! Remember The Wedding Singer with Adam Sandler? I lived it!
But the classic stuff I’ve been listening to lately is far different than the typical Led Zeppelin, Molly Hatchet, and Allman Bros. you hear on the classic stations today.
I’ve been on a Yes kick lately and have gone so far as to buy a DVD and rent a couple on Netflix. Now I’m moving on to The Beastie Boys! That’s right, white-boy rap. At the moment, as I write this, I’m onto some Al di Meola from 2002, although he has been around for decades before that.
Strunz & Farah hit my iPod every so often and then I move to Cage the Elephant and 30 Seconds to Mars! I’m not sure you can get any farther apart than that.
I should take a lesson from this all. It should mean that I’m actually growing up and expanding my musical/educational horizons. I am diving headfirst into poetry for shit’s sake. But I don’t think that’s it. I was a musician growing up and I just place a value on musical ability and talent. I guess I see that in all those groups, even the Beastie’s, who perform a musical genre I despise!
When I was in high school I would have never admitted to owning half the music I do now. To be honest, I wouldn’t have OWNED half the music I do now. But as the years came on, I really started to realize the complexity of even the simplest of chord structures and what it took to write, design, and produce a lot of music. These people have a talent I can’t even imagine. I totally get it, but I don’t have the talent to do it.
Oh well, I’ll just have to stick to writing bad prose!
